An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a device that acts as a buffer between the power supply and the devices that need electricity to operate (computers, servers, machines, etc.). 1 – Stand-alone UPS

2 – Online UPS
An in-line UPS maintains a permanent connection between the UPS battery and the devices that need power. The electricity is converted from AC to DC and then back to AC for power. The permanent connection between the battery and the devices in an in-line UPS not only avoids momentary power outages as with a stand-alone UPS but also allows the UPS to cope with voltage fluctuations. 3 – Ferro-resonant UPS
This type of UPS is very similar to a stand-alone UPS. They operate in the same way. The main difference is that the Ferro-resonant UPS uses an integrated transformer. The main limitation of off-line UPS is the brief power interruption between the closing of the switch and the start of battery power. The Ferro Resonant UPS transformer was designed to solve this problem. Since reactive power compensation devices are not compatible with transformers, this type of UPS is rarely used today.
4 – Line Interactive UPS
Line-interactive UPSs attempt to solve some of the problems of offline UPSs. Like an online UPS, it is a device that maintains a permanent connection between the battery and the output. However, the primary power source is always the AC input. If the primary power is no longer available, a switch opens to allow the UPS and inverter to recharge the battery and then supply power. Choosing a UPS Solution
For many small businesses, the main obstacle is budget. While online UPS is stable and reliable, it is also expensive. Offline UPS systems are inexpensive, but they can expose sensitive digital devices to unpredictable power outages and surges. Evaluate the capacity and power you need. And try to invest as much as possible in a reliable UPS. The initial investment may seem prohibitive, but it’s a good insurance policy.
